New day. New life. New opportunities. New adventures. New thoughts, new feelings, new sensations. God makes all things new. Every day is His New Creation. I am new today, I am being made new, I am renewing my mind and my body.
A tiny word with big impact: NEW.
New is adjective meaning “not existing before” or “already existing but seen, experienced, or acquired recently or now for the first time.”
The scriptures are full of His Promises to make all things new, and examples of new things He has created. Some of my favorite include the following:
He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Psalm 40:3
See, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind. Isaiah 65:17
I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. Ezekiel 36:26
In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. Luke 22:20
You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. Ephesians 4:22-24
I do have a new song in my mouth since I started a relationship with Christ, and I experience great joy every time I sing it. I am learning to put off my former way of life and put on my new self. I am a benefactor of the new covenant, forgiven and free because of Christ’s death and resurrection.
So often, I have considered NEW as something that happens in the future. I was focused improvement, not newness. Self-help books and programs can take me so far on the improvement spectrum, but with God, NEW can happen in an instant. I cannot become new on my own power, even with the strongest of wills. In fact, the stronger my own will, the less likely I will become New. I may become a slightly better version of myself, but I will not be made new without God’s help.
Even as I sat down to write this in the middle of the day, the NEW began in that moment. I don’t need to wait for tomorrow to start over or start again. God is the God of NEW. And it can happen at any time, in any moment, in the midst of calm or chaos. All I need to do is be willing at any moment to turn to God and ask for His new breath of life.
Thank you, God, for the truths, the possibilities, of NEW. The gift of new. The miracle of new. You are the source of new. Thank you for the new song in my mouth, for my new heart, my new spirit. Thank you for the new covenant of Grace, for my new self I find in your son Jesus. Amen
This scripture puts it all together for me:
He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” Revelation 21:5
God promises to make all things new. And His promises are trustworthy and true. God always does what He says He will do!
I see evidence in my life of the new “things” God is making and doing…
- He is creating new, beautiful, authentic relationships in my life.
- He is showing me new perspectives about suffering, compassion, and community.
- He is restoring my vitality and energy towards living happy, joyous and free.
I am certain I will be made new when I enter into His Heavenly Kingdom. AND still, I can be made new today. Each day. I live in a fallen world, the dirt and darkness come upon me each day…and God washes me clean each morning so long as I ask, believe, and submit to His cleansing power.
God is the source of NEW.
And God is open to all of us, to pour out the Living Water that brings forth new life.
